There are special moments during the Shabbat service when we create kavannah (meaning) through what I think of as the dance of prayer.
One of those is during the Shema where we chant the Shema in full voice but then add another line quietly: Baruch Shem Kavod Mal'chuto L'Olam Va'ed.Blessed be the name of the glory of God's kingdom forever and ever.
Why quietly? At Jacob’s deathbed, he feared his children would abandon their faith and assimilate into the general community. After being reassured to the contrary by the Shema, Jacob responded in an undertone Baruch Shem Kavod Malchuto L’Olam Va’ed and went to his eternal destiny. Nearing death, he could only speak in a whisper. We show our reverence for Jacob by mimicing his quiet tones.
When I hear our voices fade to a whisper during this prayer, I feel the power of Jewish tradition, teaching, and spirit. בשלום Rabbi Susan
