Rabbi's Reflections ~ תִקשׁוֹרֶת Congregants have said to me and others that we cannot discuss Israel at TBS. Not true. We can indeed have conversations about Israel but we must be respectful, good listeners, and open to different opinions.
Our Israel book group begins this Sunday at noon. To that end:
1. Make Understanding Your Purpose
2. Be Prepared to Surprise Yourself
3. Ask Powerful Questions 1. Could you share a story that would help me understand how you've come to your beliefs about this issue? 2. What value or commitment drives your beliefs about this? 3. Are there ways in which you feel pulled in different directions? Are there complexities here, or questions that you have even about your own beliefs?
Let us strive, this Sunday and always, to hold safe space between personal values and our shared humanity.
If you plan to attend, please read to page 26 in The Ten Big Anti-Israel Lies: And How to Refute Them with Truth by Alan Dershowitz. Don't like Dershowitz? Don't let that be a barrier to attendance.
