Rabbi's Reflections ~ "The Old World is Not Coming Back"
Bari Weiss, editor of the Free Press and distinguished journalist spoke recently to Jewish leaders at The Jewish Federations of North America and the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish American Organizations' recent conference: ‘Stand Together – an event of Unity, Strength, and Resilience."
Her speech is powerful and sobering. It deserves 15 minutes of your time. Let me know your thoughts after you hear her words. Email me directly at rabbi@brithshalom-az.org
Trudy Steinhauer, Immediate Past President My connection to “I Have a Little Dreidel”
Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is a highlight of the Jewish calendar. As we long for the aroma of schmaltz, while grating mounds of potatoes, making sufganiyot and other fried foods for our days of dedication, the tune passed down from one generation to the next and a Hanukkah favorite begins to waft into our minds, reminding us of our childhood days ~ “I Have a Little Dreidel” written by Samuel E. Goldfarb. Samuel Goldfarb was born in Galicia, Poland in 1891. His father, a cantor and small business man, mother and family of 11 emigrated to the Lower East Side in NY where he was raised in a strictly traditional Hasidic family and grew up in a very musical family. Sam learned to read and play music and sang in local synagogue boys’ choirs. He soon earned a living playing theater piano in a Yiddish movie and vaudeville theater in NY. After graduating from Columbia, Sam worked as a choir conductor, accompanist, composer and arranger working with such local songwriters as Irving Berlin and George Gershwin. Over the years Sam trained generations of children in music, and directed adult choirs. It was during his tenure at Temple De Hirsch in Seattle that he wrote “I Have a Little Dreidel.” A dear friend of mine in Seattle related a story that when she was in the children’s choir, Mr. Goldfarb said to her, “We love you being in the choir, especially with all of your enthusiasm, but please, please sing very softly.” I moved from New York to Seattle in 1974 and attended Temple De Hirsch Sinai. I didn’t sing well and was never on key (my current status) but I did become good friends with Sam Goldfarb’s son Michael and his fiancé. I was invited to Michael’s wedding which is where I met Douglas Steinhauer and the rest, as they say, is history. Although I never had the honor of directly meeting Mr. Goldfarb, the Dreidel song has a special meaning for me.
