Ben was in the 5th grade when his school decided to have a Thanksgiving family meal celebration with all of the 5th grade classes. We received a flyer asking us to bring something traditional from our family's cultural heritage.
I misunderstood.
We walked in to the cafeteria that evening and I immediately saw all of the turkey and mashed potatoes and green bean casserole and biscuits.
I thought we were supposed to bring a food from our culture. I presented a large plate of...wait for it...gefilte fish.
I watched all of the parents and children walk by the plate, scrunch up their noses, and move on. Horrified, I dumped pieces and pieces on Brian's and my plate so that it would look like someone was eating it.
Ben didn't realize my error, luckily, and that's the important thing, but I never attended another school Thanksgiving dinner again. I was probably banned. בשלום, Rabbi Susan
