I taught a class at Olli recently and was explaining that our Friday night Shabbat Service follows a nosh when a student asked me what a nosh is.
Honestly, I thought nosh was pretty standard American. But, clearly there is a Yiddish vocabulary that many of us grew up with but which others have not learned. So, just in case, here is Yiddish 101.
Bissel (bisl)— A little bit Bubbe (bubby) — Grandmother Chutzpah —Nerve, confidence Daven — To pray Klutz — A clumsy person Kvell — To experience pride in someone Kvetch — To complain, whine or fret. Mensch (mentsch)— an honorable, decent person. Meshuggeneh — Crazy, ridiculous, insane. Mishpocheh (mishpokhe, mishpucha)— Family, or someone who is “like family” Nosh — To eat or nibble. Oy vey—An expression of woe Schlep — To carry or travel with difficulty. Schmooze (shmooze)— Chat, make small talk. Shande (shanda, shonda) — A scandal, embarrassment. Shmatte — A rag or old garment. Tachlis —Nuts and bolts, practical, concrete matters. Tchotchke (tchatchke)— Knick-knack Tuches (tuchis) — Butt, behind, sometimes shortened to tush or tushy. Zayde (zaide)— Grandfather
So, put on a shmatte and be a mensch and shlep to TBS with the mishpocheh on Friday night for a bissel of a nosh. Maybe you'll purchase a tchotchke on the sale table. We'll shmooze, maybe kvetch, and talk tachlis. Then, we'll daven on our tuches and kvell when the children show some chutzpah and come up the ark. And after it's all over, we'll shlep back home for a restful Shabbos.
Oy vey. בשלום, Rabbi Susan
