The Midrash relates that King David was anguished when he foresaw the destruction of the Holy Temple and the cessation of the offering of the sacrifices. “How will the Jews atone for their failings?” he wondered.
God replied: “When suffering will befall the Jews because of their failings, they should gather before Me in complete unity. Together they shall confess the Selichot, and I will answer their prayers.”
SEH-LEE-CHOAT is the start of the High Holy Days and at TBS it is an evening of good food followed by a short musical service.
Traditionally, the Selichot service begins at midnight but, well, at TBS we begin this Saturday at 6:00pm after a 5:00pm potluck for those who have signed up (or who contact Shari Brooks by Friday ~ Shari@jbrookswa.com.) That way, our children can attend and we aren't all asleep during the service. I've experienced late night Selichot services and they aren't easy.
It may sound like too much to attend a service before Rosh Hashanah but it's important to dedicate time to prepare ourselves mentally before we begin the serious prayers of the Yamim Noraim.
Shanah Tovah, Rabbi Susan
