On Tikkun Leil Shavuot many Jews study from sundown when Shavuot begins until sunrise when the morning service of Shavuot takes place.
This practice originated with the mystics of Safed. One reason given is that the Israelites slept late on the day the Torah was revealed and had to be awakened by Moses. To avoid making that mistake again, we stay awake all night, eager to receive the divine law.
The mystics also thought that the heavens opened at midnight to receive prayers, and Moroccan Jews believe that staying up all night will grant one life in the next year. Some Jews ritually immerse in a mikvah at sunrise, purifying themselves for Shavuot just as the Israelites purified themselves to receive Torah.
There is also the custom of staying up late on the second night of Shavuot to recite the entire book of Psalms (all 150). This is because King David, traditionally identified as the author of psalms, was born and died on Shavuot. (Maybe next year?)
At TBS, our Shavuot observance is from 5:30-9:00ish this Tuesday evening. We begin with an inspiring service filled with poetry and the opportunity for all to physically hold the Torah. Then, after a traditional nosh of ice cream and cheesecake, we welcome Rabbi Nina and Tom Brodersen for learning sessions, a reading of The Book of Ruth led by me, Israeli dancing with Shira, and a short restorative practice with Annah-Mikayla.
Shavuot is, yes it’s true, one of the three major Jewish festivals on the calendar – equal in importance to Sukkot and Pesach. Please join us.
Yizkor will be Wednesday, June 12 at 5:30pm. A short but poignant service to remember those upon whose shoulders we stand. L'shalom, Rabbi Susan
