There is a concept in Judaism that we climb the ladder of holiness. We do not get there all at once, but rather, one rung at a time.
I like to apply this imagery to my personal ritual practice. I recently began noticing the mezuzah on my front door in a way I never have before. I kiss it now at least once a day as I exit or enter. This small act really does remind me of who I am and that I have a relationship with the Divine.
Likewise, my eating habits reflect my adherence to Jewish tradition. They haven't always, but this is now one more way that I stop to acknowledge my Jewishness.
When I first wore a kippah at Temple, I was self-conscious and unsure of myself. Now, I wear it easily and with a certain amount of pride.
I wonder what will be next for me as I continue to climb the ladder. What will be next for you?
L'shalom, Rabbi Susan

The Jewish Path of Gratitude & Blessing Sunday, August 20 at 1pm Presented by Rabbi Nina Perlmutter
Our tradition has long encouraged expressions of gratitude. Even in hard, bad times we’re to stop, notice some good, and thank the Source of All. Talmud promotes doing this 100 times a day! We’ll learn & discuss how this plays out in daily Jewish practices both private and communal– from the time of waking up to bedtime. Thankfulness and blessings are integral to Jewish “mindfulness” practice.
