Rabbi’s Reflections ~ Memories June 28, 1998. Brian and I had just returned two days earlier after escorting a group of Camp Pearlstein teens to NYC to board their flight to Israel. We had a day and a half to eat our way through Manhattan with gooey pizza and pastrami on rye and a knish at Yoneh Shimmel on the lower east side. We returned to Phoenix and Brian left immediately to resume his summer as an administrator at camp.
On a routine van trip to pick up camp laundry, Brian felt painful twinges in his chest. He drove himself to the Prescott hospital (much smaller back then) and walked into the ER where he was immediately diagnosed with a heart attack. He was 41. His parents and sister and I rushed up to Prescott. We spent the night in the waiting room as doctors assessed the damage. Fortunately, it was a "mild" cardiac infarction. Brian was transported a couple of days later by ambulance to a Phoenix hospital where he made a full recovery. No more camp that summer but Brian went back the next year after making some drastic changes to his lifestyle. No more pastrami, no more pizza and knishes, and a dedication to cycling that lasted for many years.
We always remind ourselves on June 28 of how fortunate we were that he got to the hospital in time and that the medical personnel in Prescott saved his life. Who knew that 25 years later we would spend June 28, 2023 in this life saving town.
Does anyone do calligraphy? I'm looking for help on baby naming certificates, etc.
