Rabbi’s Reflections ~ בני מצווה I was 35 when I celebrated my bat mitzvah. In my home, boys were obligated to become bar mitzvah but girls had a choice. And, given my lack of exposure to synagogue life when the question was posed, I said no without hesitation. I really had no idea what it even meant.
By the time I was in my 30s, I was fully involved in Judaism at a synagogue and was delighted to have the opportunity to stand on the bimah with two other women and one man and become bat mitzvah. It was a defining moment in my life.
Maybe you would treasure an opportunity to engage in study towards such a goal. I envision a bar/bat mitzvah class starting after the High Holy Days this October with the service in late spring.
Rituals such as an adult bar/bat mitzvah ceremony are life-affirming and joyous. You didn't miss out when you were young. This will be the perfect time.
