Next Thursday evening, May 25, Jews all over the world will gather for an all-night Torah study session based on a kabbalistic practice. We remain awake to show that, come morning, we are ready to receive Torah.
The mystics had the idea that at midnight the heavens open and favorably receive the thoughts, study, and prayers of those who remain awake on the anniversary of the Revelation.
In modern times, Tikkun Leil Shavuot (all-night study) might consist of a series of discussions on a variety of topics based on ancient or modern texts, Jewish history, or current events. Refreshments such as ice cream are usually served.
Join us next Thursday from 6:00pm-9:00pm for a short service followed by two hours of teaching and, yes, ice cream sundaes. Rabbi Nina and Tom Brodersen will share learning. Jessica and I will lead the short, musical service.
Rabbi Nina's Topic: Being at Sinai—What was it like & how is it relevant? Our sages taught that all Jews -- past, present, future, born Jewish or converted--were present at Sinai. AND that we each experienced that very dramatic event differently. We’ll imagine, share, compare, challenge & discuss—then try to apply the story to our lives today.
Tom's Topic: The Kabbalistic Origin of Tikkun Leil Shavuot From Torah to Midrash & Zohar to Safed we will explore the mystical roots of the Shavuot study session.
Shavuot is a major festival. We celebrate the receiving of the Torah. Reason enough for celebration, I should say. Please join us. L'shalom, ~ Rabbi Susan rabbi@brithshalom-az.org
