Keeping kosher for Pesach means abstaining from chametz, the fermented products of five principal grains: wheat, rye, spelt, barley and oats. Though matzah, the unleavened bread eaten on Passover, is made from grain, it is produced under highly controlled conditions to ensure that it does not ferment.
Ashkenazi Jews who keep kosher for Pesach have also traditionally avoided eating kitniyot, a category of foods that includes corn, rice, beans and lentils, though the Conservative movement’s rabbinic authorities overturned the kitniyot prohibition in 2015. Sephardi Jews do not abstain from kitniyot.
Each of us at TBS makes our own decisions regarding kashrut for Pesach. But, I do think it's important that we consider some form of Pesach practice beyond attending a seder. I think spending a week noticing the difference between this and every other week of the year adds meaning to our lives. Thinking about freedom and enslavement, how far we've come and how far we still have to go are worthwhile considerations this next week.
Shout Out to the Jazz Kats under the direction of Rob Ratner. Rob is a member of TBS. His band donated many hours of rehearsal and performance time for the Gala. Jessica rehearsed for months with the band and we are all so grateful. Contact Rob for info about upcoming performances at: Robscottjazz@gmail.com or rrjazzbands.com
Gala Results and Thank You from Gloria Hershman
Dear TBS,
Our total revenue from ticket sales, donations and auction items was $32,370. Our expenses from Prescott Lakes and other direct expenses were $6,718 resulting in a profit of $25,652.
I would like to thank my committee, our anonymous underwriter, the Jewish Community Foundation, auction donors, Joanne Brody for her wonderful photos, volunteers who worked the gala night and attendees for your support of our fundraiser. Like the saying goes, it takes a village and thanks to the support of the entire congregation, our event was very successful.
I would like to give a special shout out to my “brain trust": Susan Sappington, Deb Plotkin, Jessica Dreifuss, Dan Adler, and Rob Ratner.
Susan Sappington and Deb Plotkin were hard at work, checking out all the live auction items. Jessica Dreifuss not only performed brilliantly for us that evening, but was also responsible for our website, advertising material, the catalog development, every piece of paper we needed to execute the event. Dan Adler, was not only our MC and Auctioneer, but was also the donor and the pilot of our three Grand Canyon aerial live auction excursions. Lastly, but certainly not least, was Rob Ratner and his Jazz Kats band. Rob, a congregant, a well-known and highly regarded local musician entertained us from 5pm to 9:30pm with his wonderful music. Please know that Rob donated the services of his band members along with Jessica which was the highlight of the evening.
Not only was the Gala a financial fundraising success, but it was a successful “friendraising” event.
Thanks to all, Gloria Hershman
