Our Mussar group is discussing "Truth" this week. What does it mean to be honest? Is there ever a time when it is kinder to lie? What do we fear when we avoid the truth?
Jewish scholar Rabbi Yisrael Salanter gave a regular Talmudic discourse. One day, a student asked a question that seemed to undermine the entire argument Rabbi Salanter was making. He paused for a moment, then conceded the point and stepped down from the podium. Later he told his students that he had considered answers that would not have been completely truthful, but that no one would have guessed. Instead, he chose to admit the truth ~ that he did not know the answer.
Truth is an exercise, a judgment, and a test. The goal is to live truth according to the guidance of your heart, for the sake of your soul as well as the souls of others.
