Rabbi’s Reflections ~ Lecha Dodi: Welcoming the Sabbath Bride
Every Friday evening at TBS, we sing the medieval prayer Lecha Dodi. In the 16th century, mystics would dress in white like bridegrooms and dance through the fields outside town to greet the Sabbath, depicted in both Talmud and in mystical texts as a bride and queen. Around 1540, Alkabets, a poet, composed Lecha Dodi, urging Jews to greet the Sabbath as a bride. “Enter, O Bride,” signals us to turn to the entrance of the sanctuary and bow in honor of the Sabbath Queen. We imagine her coming through the doorway and into our souls where she will reside until Havdalah on Saturday evening. We are redefined by her presence and joyful that she has brought Shabbat to us. Curious to learn more about the prayers of our liturgy? Join our Discovering Judaism class on Thursday, Feb. 23 from 12:45-2:00pm, for a discussion of our prayers. All are welcome.
