Hanukkah has evolved over the centuries according to the needs of the Jewish people. Originally a military victory in 163 B.C.E., the theme became more spiritual in the centuries that followed because the Jews were almost always under the rule of a hostile conquering force and to brag about one’s strength and prowess in battle was not a good idea. Throughout the middle ages, the miracle of the oil and the celebration of light kept the Jewish people warm and comforted as they struggled to survive in shtetls, frequent displacements, and broad anti-Semitism.
When the Zionists rose up to reclaim the land in the early 20th century, the military theme found a home once more. New Israelis were proud to recall their ancestors’ strength as they felt themselves in a similar position. So Hanukkah became, once again. a celebration of the Maccabees and their triumph against overwhelming odds. Freedom of religion, the miracle of the oil, and our strength of conviction are all themes that resonate with us this week. May your Hanukkah lights burn brightly.
