Rabbi’s Reflections ~ “Who shall live and who shall die?”
Before God lies a giant book — the Book of Life — in which we hope all of our names will be inscribed for the coming year. The Unetaneh Tokef tells us that on Rosh Hashanah, those deserving names are entered and on Yom Kippur, the Book is sealed.
We understand this disturbing and powerful text less as a promise of simplistic reward and punishment and more as a statement of the fragility of life and our own mortality. Our lives are a gift. We perform teshuvah not to appease a distant and invisible Deity, but to remind us of our value to one another and to strengthen our relationships with each other. The vital message of Unetaneh Tokef requires us to ask ourselves not who shall live, but how shall we live?
Shanah Tovah, Rabbi Susan
As we approach the High Holidays, we offer this prayer:
Dear Family and Friends of Temple B’rith Shalom,
In reflecting on the past year, it has been a challenging one for all and painful for many. We’re so fortunate to have this occasion to reflect, refresh, renew and welcome a new year that we are so eager for.
We thank those who have supported our congregation by finding solace, comfort and joy in our Shabbat services. We thank those families who are educating your children in the values and traditions of Judaism, your children are our future. We also thank the many that have attended our adult ed classes.
We regret there are congregants who feel we have not served your needs as well as those who have not felt welcome into our sanctuary and to that we deeply apologize and are truly sorry. Saying the words may not be enough but we’re asking you to remember that Temple B’rith Shalom, this “covenant of peace” can be fragile and we all need to commit ourselves to its care and nurturing. With this commitment we will heal and move forward.
We celebrate those who have entered our doors in the last six weeks and have rejoined our Temple family, we say welcome home. To those who have yet to return to us, we open our arms and hope to embrace very soon.
We have so much to look forward to as we welcome 5783 with sweetness and hope for the new year.
L’Shanah Tovah, Tempe B’rith Shalom, Board of Directors
