Rabbi's Reflections
Jewish philosopher Martin Buber (1878-1965) taught that we enter relationships as either an “It” or a “Thou.” An “It” relationship is defined by superficial mutual need. For example, the cashier needs to scan my grocery items and I need to pay for them. I greet the cashier kindly and we exchange a few words about the weather or sports or something unimportant, but the conversation does not deepen to really meaningful information. “It” relationships are absolutely necessary in society. They are how we get things done.
“Thou” relationships occur when we know one another deeply. We go beyond the surface to truly understand, empathize, and feel for one another. In these relationships, Buber says that God is present. Why? Because we are able to convey and experience the types of characteristics that we hope God possesses. We hope that God is deeply compassionate, deeply generous, deeply just. And, in our most valued relationships, we want to be those things.
As the month of Elul continues, I invite you to consider with whom you share a “Thou” relationship. Imagine that God is present whenever you interact with those people. Are your “Thou” relationships in good order? Do you have work to do? I imagine the answer, for all of us, is yes.
