Rabbi's Reflections
We chant or recite the Shehecheyanu whenever we realize the miracle of the present moment. Traditionally, when we do something for the first time that year — such as lighting Hanukkah candles, hearing the shofar, or shaking a lulav and etrog — as well as at the start of most Jewish holidays this blessing expresses the wonder of having arrived.
However, if we are truly present, we could say Shehecheyanu many times a day, because there are so many moments that are indeed miraculous and precious in our daily lives. What if we could make a commitment to fully inhabit life? Rising to challenges, open to an awareness of our place in the big picture, cognizant of the gift of life. Reminded not to take anything for granted and to allow ourselves to be surprised.
Blessed are You, Eternal Spirit, who has given us life, sustained us and allowed us to arrive in this moment.
Wouldn’t that be wonderful? ~ Rabbi Susan
